Lipomatosis of the sciatic nerve: multimodal approach in diagnostics

https://doi.org/10.51523/2708-6011.2026-23-3-14

Abstract

Objective. To present a clinical case of atypically located nerve lipomatosis with traumatic injury in an adult patient’s medical history, and to demonstrate the current capabilities of ultrasound diagnostics in this pathology.

Materials and methods. A retrospective analysis of the patient’s medical history treated at the Peking University Third Hospital (China) was conducted.

Results. Nerve lipomatosis is a rare benign congenital peripheral nerve lesion. Involvement of the sciatic nerve trunk is exceptionally uncommon and may pose diagnostic challenges in differential diagnosis. Differential diagnostics is carried out with malignant neoplasms (liposarcoma, malignant neoplasm of the peripheral nerve sheaths) to avoid unjustifiably aggressive treatment.

Conclusion. The presented clinical case highlights the importance of an integrative approach based on a multidisciplinary analysis of clinical, morphological, and advanced medical imaging data for the accurate verification of rare peripheral nerve tumors with atypical localization.
