Features of alcohol addiction syndrome in men and women

Abstract
Objective: To study the social, hereditary, clinical, and psychological differences in the course of alcohol addiction syndrome (AAS) in men and women to substantiate additional examination and treatment methods.
Materials and methods: 123 patients with AAS of those 99 men and 24 women, were examined at the Republican Scientific Practical Center (RSPC) for Mental Health in Minsk in 2024.
Results: Men were more likely to be unemployed than women (40 (40.4%) and 4 (16.7%) accordingly, p=0.029). Employed men had a longer work history than unemployed ones (employed men – 20.0 [10.0, 22.0] years old, unemployed men – 10.0 [5.0, 20.0] years old, p=0.024). Women were characterized by a higher incidence of second-degree blood relatives (men – 53 (53.5%), women – 21 (87.5%), p=0.005). Maternal alcoholism was more common among women (men – 8 (8.1%), women – 7 (29.2%), p=0.010). Women differed with preference for mildly (beer, gin and tonic) and medium (wine) alcoholic drinks in the early stages of the disease (p<0.05) and a reduced daily tolerance to alcohol (p<0.05). Women were common with higher incidence of accentuated personality traits, especially emotive types (men – 58 (59.8%), women – 20 (83.3%), p=0.031).
Conclusion. The differences found do not allow to separate “male” or “female” alcoholism into separate nosological categories, but they significantly influence the choice of examination and treatment methods
